Best 7 Habits to Steal From People With Great Skin

Easy Habits Your Skin Will Thank You For

People have been searching for the fountain of youth, the secret, or the miracle cure to younger skin for millennia. Cleopatra bathed in milk and honey. Elizabeth Bathory believed that the secret of youthful skin lied in the blood of young virgin girls. Women in the 1940s bought creams made with poisonous radium that promised glowing skin. History is riddled with incongruous beauty treatments proving that great skin has always been something that people valued and desired. Nowadays through the advancement of science, beauty treatments have become more effective and, more importantly, safer.

Now, while the quality of our skin depends in part on our genetic makeup, our daily habits and the actions we take to care for our skin play a huge role. When you look at people that have great skin, more often than not, they share some common habits. These do not require huge effort or a lot of money and are easily implemented by anyone. Do you want to know what they are? Then keep on reading.

1) They cleanse their face every night

Never wear your make up to bed. No matter how tired you are, taking the extra 5 minutes to remove your makeup and wash your face is well worth it. Wearing your make up to bed clogs your pores and will make you more prone to breakouts and inflammations. We recommend a quick double cleanse (oil cleanser followed by a foam cleanser) using lukewarm water to remove all the makeup and excess sebum collected throughout the day. Your skin will thank you for it.

2) They moisturize every day

If one day you are too lazy to do your full skincare routine, then at least put on some moisturizer. Moisturizing is a vital part of your skincare. Your skin is the most exposed part of your body and this can lead to dryness and loss of moisture. Moisturizing can help slow down that loss and add hydration to dry areas. If you are reticent about wearing some because of a humid climate or oily skin, dermatologists still recommend it. In those cases opt for a lighter, more watery lotions with ingredients like hyaluronic acid.

3) They drink plenty of water

While we are already on the topic of hydration, drinking lots of water is basically moisturizing from the inside out. Your body and organs need water, and your skin is the biggest organ of your body. Keeping hydrated is not only important for your skin but for your health in general, so drink up!

4) They get enough quality sleep

It's not called beauty sleep for nothing! Studies have shown that getting enough sleep on a regular basis makes you appear younger and healthier. Another study found that people who slept enough recovered faster from UV light exposure, and their skin also showed fewer signs of aging

5) They wear sunscreen

One of the biggest external factors of skin aging is UV rays (and yes they do hit you even on cloudy days). UV rays break down your skin's connective tissue  — collagen and elastin fibers, which lie in the deeper layer of skin (dermis). Loss of these tissues is what causes wrinkles in your skin. To prevent that from happening, avoid tanning, and wear sunscreen every day.

6) They avoid junk food and excess sugar

Now we love a nice cheezy pizza and chocolate just as much as everyone else, but people have been saying "we are what we eat" for a reason. Too much sugar can lead to inflammation or acne, so stay away from processed foods as much as possible. Instead, try reaching for foods containing natural antioxidants and vitamins to give your skin that beautiful glow.

7) They exfoliate regularly

All the lotions and treatments of the world will not do much for you if you apply them on dead skin. Not only do they block all those expensive skincare products to actually be able to do what they are meant to do, but they can also clog pores and cause breakouts and acne. Gently exfoliating your skin at least once a week will remove them and leave your face fresh and ready for all the good stuff. If you have sensitive skin, it might be best to opt for a chemical exfoliator rather than a scrub.

While many brands out there claim they have found the miracle cure to good skin, there is, unfortunately, no such thing.
